Change the security question of your Facebook Login

Like many other online services, Facebook offers a "security question" feature that allows you to reset your login credentials by verifying several pieces of information, one of which is a question to which only you (hopefully) know the answer. In this tutorial, we will show you how to setup a security question if you have never done so, and how to change your secret question and/or answer after the fact. Both operations are done in exactly the same way. Note that this is only one of a few security measures you can take to protect your Facebook Login, and prevent others from accessing your account. (For example, learn how you can now setup Login Approvals to sign in to Facebook from new computers.)

Protect invalid sign in attempts with a (new) security question!

Start by signing into Facebook as you typically would; once you're looking at your profile, click on "Account" in the top right corner of the page, and click on "Account Settings" in the dropdown menu.

Confirm that the "Settings" tab is selected on top, and scroll down to see the "Security Question" section; now click on the "change" button (note that Facebook says "change" whether you have already setup a secret question and answer or never set one up in the first place). Here's where you'll add or change your security question / secret answer for your Facebook account:

Add or change security question / secret answer in your Facebook account

Pick a "Question" from the dropdown menu; then, type in your secret "Answer" in the text box below it.

Tip: although this may not necessarily apply to your Facebook secret question / answer combo, here's a trick to always get it right in your online accounts. Type everything in lowercase, and try removing any punctuation and/or spaces in your password hints, security questions, and other such verification features. You would not believe the amount of time one can waste by entering the correct information, but in the wrong case (upper/lower), or with extra spaces or punctuation marks!

Double-check the question you picked, and pay particular attention to typos in the answer you typed; Facebook, after all, is a machine (computer program), so it will expect you to enter exactly the right information should you ever need to enter your security question / answer to reset your login. Then, click on the "Change Security Question" button: note that your new setting will take effect immediately.

We recommend that you regularly change the password for your Facebook Login, and likewise update your secret question/answer, especially if you check Facebook from public computers and other unfamiliar locations. Keep hackers on their toes, and take a few minutes to make your profile more secure.
